Bloom Report - March 14, 2025

Hi everyone!

With spring in the air and some warm days ahead,

we wanted to share some of the new beauty

that is appearing in the Gardens.

First, a reminder about our winter hours...

The Gardens are open for walking every day 9am-5pm

through the winter as long as conditions permit. The Gardens and paths are not maintained from November to April, so you visit at your own risk.

Entry is gained through the Gardens Shop

and admission is by free will offering - suggested donation $5 per adult.

(If you have a Garden Membership, there is no expectation of an entry offering,

although donations are always gratefully accepted.)

Visitor Washrooms – Closed for the winter.

(Public washrooms are available nearby at the Town’s Comfort Station on Drury Lane.)

The Gardens Shop is also open 7 days a week, 9am-5pm.

Witch Hazels

We love our witch hazels!

The witch hazels are currently at their peak

and will continue to be be a highlight until late March.

Shown above are 'Jelena', 'Pallida', 'Ruby Glow' and 'Arnold Promise'.

They are easy to miss, so please ask for directions in the Gardens Shop

if you want to be sure to see them all!

Spring is starting to spring!

An ode to the snowdrops that are popping up all over...

And to the emergence of so many other spring things!

Daffs...

Croci...

Sekka Willow and Heath...

And other residents like the Skunk Cabbage are emerging from the ground.

And the birds are celebrating!

The Gardens Shop - Newsflash!

We are pleased to announce that the Gardens Shop is now a proud member of the Nova Scotia Loyal programme. When you look through the Shop, you will see a Nova Scotia Loyal emblem on or beside most of our products - we primarily feature the work of Nova Scotia makers and creators. Beyond those products, we have some things from other parts of Canada, also indicated in the displays. And finally, although a rarity, we have a few products that are international, like our Audubon Bird stuffies for example.

Please explore the Shop next time you are in, and chat with our staff!

We also have a handy list of the suppliers who make our Shop so special:

The Gardens Shop is typically open 7 days a week for your convenience,

from 9am-5pm. Drop by soon!

February Flag Day Celebration

We had our first ever Flag Day event this year, and what a great gathering it turned out to be! An enthusastic and patriotic crowd enjoyed social time and ended in a rousing rendition of "O Canada".

We posted a video of those final moments and had more than 60,000 views online - it felt good to spread some virtual joy into the world!

Donations to the Gardens

The Annapolis Royal Historic Gardens Society is a registered charity whose purpose is stewardship of these Seventeen Acres of Paradise. Without the charitable donations we receive every year, the Gardens could simply not exist. We encourage you to support the Society in this important work to help to ensure the Gardens continue to blossom for future generations.

Please consider a donation today!

Did you know?

Signing up for a monthly donation to the Gardens has many advantages. It allows you to spread your gift over 12 payments for predictable budgeting. And it helps us by providing a predictable monthly revenue source.

If you are interested, you can contact us at 902-532-7018 to set up a credit card donation, or you can use the automated system provided through the CanadaHelps portal. By either method, the Gardens receives your contributions on a regular basis.

Happy Pi Day!

Since it is Pi Day, let's celebrate the circle!

The first two images are "fun with a mirror".

The third image is of last night's lunar eclipse.

The lunar eclipse last night was pretty awesome

and I was fortunate to be able to grab a few photos.

For those who are curious about the science behind the colour of the Blood Moon,

here is an explanation from space.com:

During a full eclipse something spectacular happens. The moon is fully in Earth's shadow. At the same time, a little bit of light from Earth's sunrises and sunsets (on the disk of the planet) falls on the surface of the moon. Because the light waves are stretched out, they look red. When this red light strikes the moon's surface, it also appears red.

With some great days ahead, we hope to see many of you in the Gardens soon to see this beauty first hand.

Meanwhile, I have some homework for you!

CBC's The Current is gathering submissions to creat a "Bucket List" of favourite vacation spots in Canada. And, well, heck... I bet there are many among you who might consider Annapolis Royal and the Annapolis Royal Historic Gardens among your favourites.

So we ask you to follow this link and make a submission. It's quick and easy, and another great opportunity to share your love for the Gardens with others.

Oh Canada! The Current's Travel Bucket List

All for now. Cheers!

Trish

The Gardens would not be here without lots of amazing community support. Please consider a donation to the Annapolis Royal Historic Gardens Society (Charitable # 106714736 RR0001).
