A History of Port Royal – Annapolis Royal 1605-1800
A History of Port Royal/Annapolis Royal 1605-1800 - by Brenda Dunn
The quiet, picturesque town of Annapolis Royal stands in startling contrast to its turbulent history: known as Port Royal until 1720, the community was the centre of European settlement first for Acadia, then of Nova Scotia, and a focus of hostilities between France and Great Britain in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The cradle of Acadia in the 1600s , the town was one of the principal settings of the tragic Acadian deportaion. A History of Port-Royal/Annapolis Royal chronicles the first 200 years of the community, describing with clarity and depth not only the political and military conflicts, but also the French-English mix of civil and social life that shaped it over the centuries.
Backed by the Historical Association of Annapolis Roya, Brenda Dunn, former historian at the Fort Anne National Historic Site, has documented the long, dynamic, and unparalleled history of this fascinating place called Annapolis Royal.
